Celebrate Fathers Day 2017 in London

If your dad is the outdoor, active type, why not try a fabulously exhilarating helicopter tour, souring over the London landscape, taking in sights such as The Shard, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace, or opt for a daredevil speedboat excursion on the Thames in a RIB (rigid inflatable boat).  Prices range from £150 per person for this superb helicopter experience, or around £43 per adult for the speedboat ride. Two thrilling ideas, sure to blow the wind out of his sails!

Still for those adrenaline junkie fathers, for £130, the SEA LIFE London Aquarium offers the experience of a lifetime- ‘Snorkelling with Sharks.’  Your Dad will be able to get up close and personal in the aquarium's famous shark tank, giving him a really nail- biting encounter with these beautiful creatures- the ultimate sea predators, without the need to leave the UK.  Not for the fainthearted!

Alternatively, you could challenge Dad to a 90 minute, amazingly unforgettable expedition across the roof of the O2 Arena!  For a £30 fee, he’ll be suspended 53m high and wend his way along a tensile fabric walkway, enabling him, at the summit, to savour the unsurpassed 360° view of London on the observation platform.  An unforgettable experience!

For a rather less expensive option, (that is depending on how much you intend to drink!) you could take your Dad for one of the latest range of craft beers which are becoming increasingly popular throughout the capital.  These are progressive beers brewed by small-scale enterprises, quite unlike traditional British beer and often with a unique taste. Combine this with a gourmet burger, or a meal at a trendy gastro pub like The Anchor and Hope or the Canton Arms, and you have a marriage made in heaven!

Brewery tours are a very popular idea for Dads who like to know the ins and outs of making good beer.  Head off to the Camden Town Brewery to meet he brewers, have a look around and find out all there is to know about beer production.

On a historical theme, or for those Dads who see themselves as military buffs, why not pay a visit to HMS Belfast and take time to explore what life was like on Europe’s only surviving 2nd World War cruiser?  There is a host of activities to give your Dad a wonderful, educational day out, whether it be recovering a drowned plane, becoming a lookout on the flag deck and being wowed by the 360- degree views of the capital, or experiencing the boiler and engine room environment 15 feet below sea level, in the bowels of this famously imposing warrior of the seas. Prices start from £14.50.

If you want to treat your Dad to a more leisurely pursuit this Father’s Day, there are a wide variety of options. From that leisurely meander amongst London’s beautiful variety of gardens and parks, to the cultural treats of an evening under the stars at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre.  Combine this with a hilarious play such as Twelfth Night, at the famous Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and you have everything you need for an indulgent treat to keep Dad happy for another year!

Get ready for a fantastic summer in London

With the long summer days, and evenings, London’s vibrant atmosphere comes alive with its famous parks packed with sun worshippers, open air events and other outdoor attractions in abundance.  Take, for example, the city’s rooftop bars, offering fabulous views of London’s ‘city-scape’, allowing you to eat, drink and be merry, whilst watching the sun set with a glass in hand. So, escape the heat of the pavements and get a birds-eye view of the city. Try both the Rooftop at the Boundary in Shoreditch and Coq d’Argent which offer outdoor fine dining roof-top style.

June has a plethora of events on offer, ranging from famous royal events, like the spectacular Trooping the Colour, a military parade to celebrate Her Majesty’s official birthday. This unmissable event along the Mall oozes British pomp and pageantry, and has taken place in our capital for 200 years now.

Trooping the Colour, London 2017

Other royal events during June include the Changing of the Guard Ceremony outside Buckingham Palace, along with the Household Division’s Beating Retreat at Horse Guards Parade. This unique British sunset pageant takes place every Wednesday/Thursday evening, before the Queen’s official birthday in June.  You’ll witness precision drills from expert cavalrymen, accompanied by cannons, fireworks and music from the Household Divisions massed band of over 300 musicians. To top off at least one of these evenings, either the Queen herself, or one of her senior family members, will attend the ceremony to take the salute.

June is certainly the time to take in the wealth of festivals, sports activities and free entertainment on offer in the capital.  With the vibrant flower displays on show, make sure you spend time savouring the beautiful parks within the city. Alternatively, on 17th/18th June, why not explore over 230 private, secret and little-known gardens, in the Open Garden Squares Weekend?  For a mere £13 per adult, you’ll experience gardens ranging from the historic and traditional, to the new, more experimental ones.  Gardens will include private and roofed gardens, community allotments, those belonging to historic buildings, institutions, cafés, schools and shops. One ticket gives access to numerous gardens across the weekend.

Meanwhile on 25th June how about cheering along the racers at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, at London Regatta Centre?  Watch, as up to 40 different teams take to the Thames to compete to win one of four trophies.  Whilst there, you can sample the Asian food delights on offer and watch the Chinese lion dancing or martial arts displays.  There is also live music on offer at this great, free family day out.

Or for Father’s Day, (18th June), you could challenge Dad to a 90 minute, amazingly unforgettable expedition across the roof of the O2 Arena!  For a £30 fee, he’ll be suspended 53m high and wend his way along a tensile fabric walkway, enabling him, at the summit, to savour the unsurpassed 360° view of London on the observation platform.  An experience he’ll always remember!

For a famously British tradition, why not head over to SW19 from 3 -16 July to sample strawberries and cream at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships, along with some of the best tennis around? This popular two week, Grand Slam event, features world renowned tennis players from all around the globe.  This is the longest running tournament in the world, developing from its first competition in 1877, to the massive event that it is today, attracting up to 500,000 spectators, plus millions more viewers, who watch the televised event.

Reserve your serviced apartment for Wimbledon 2017!

Taking place in the historical setting of Wimbledon Village, this event largely overshadows a hidden gem, the unique village itself, which offers a blend of select boutique shops, cafes and bars, set amongst handsome period buildings and open spaces like Wimbledon Common. (Remember the Wombles)?  This large common includes ponds, a windmill and nature trail and is home to a variety of birds and insects.

Also worth a visit, whilst on the tennis theme is Wimbledon Tennis Museum.  Open daily from 10am to 5.30pm and located within the grounds of the famous Wimbledon Tennis Club, this shows the history of the game through the ages and attracts all ages, through its interactives and touch screens, which help people to experience all the traditions, artistic flair of the players and skills needed to become one of the all- time greats in tennis.  Also available are tours of the grounds, where you can gain access to a few restricted areas, normally inaccessible to the public.

When visiting this phenomenal museum, you’ll begin to understand why a ‘Wimbledon title’ is the most coveted success in tennis.

Summer is the perfect time to explore many of London's open-air events. It is now a London summer institution to see global stars performing in front of huge crowds.  Hyde Park’s 2017 concert programme, for example, boasts the likes of Phil Collins, Green Day, Justin Bieber, Kings of Leon, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performing live. Whilst supporting acts at these one-day festivals include Blondie, Tears for Fears and Stevie Nicks amongst the line-up.

For the classical enthusiast, take to the world famous Royal Albert Hall to see the BBC Proms; an eight week, fabulous, affordable classical music experience.

As July is often the warmest month in London, take advantage of this and enjoy an open-top bus tour, or eat al-fresco at many of London’s cafes and restaurants. Take Tattershall Castle, for example, one of the Thames’ permanently moored boats, near Embankment. This has recently undergone a major refurbishment to be ready for the long summer nights.

Or, thanks to Boris Johnson’s Bikes, scattered around the capital, you can hop on a cycle and see the city from a different perspective. Many of London’s Royal Parks have cycle routes to make your ride even more enjoyable.

If picnics and Pimm’s are more to your liking, you could head to Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in their huge outdoor auditorium. Shows take place throughout the summer months, whatever the weather.

Alternatively, for art lovers, the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival, takes place across Royal Greenwich, Docklands and Tower Hamlets.  This annual festival presents street theatre, circus, music, dance acts and performing art events, with a range of international artists taking part.

For something a little different on those long summer nights, you’ll find the Rooftop Film Club has several venues where you can enjoy a film, snuggled in a comfy chair, complete with a blanket, for those chillier evenings.

Or you could don your swimwear and sample the Hot Tub Cinema. Book your own tub, or share with others, and indulge in the luxury of drinking, film-going and bathing, all at the same time! This even comes complete with your own waiter! What more could you ask for?

One last idea for a sensational summer activity, which is always a popular pastime at this time of year, is to mess about on the water!  There are a range of rowing boats or pedalos to hire in such venues as, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park and Battersea Park.  So get out into the sultry, summer air and sample the London delights on offer this season.

Make the most of spring time in London

When the sun makes an appearance in London in the spring and the temperatures begin to rise, there is no better time to sample the capital’s delights.  All the city's parks are awash with every variety of spring blooms, so it’s an absolute joy to stroll amongst the azaleas in the Isabella Plantation at Richmond Park.

Reserve your serviced apartment for Richmond Park

Another unmissable venue during springtime in London is the exceptional Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, where you can partake in daily, springtime, blossom-spotting walks.  With a royal palace, treetop walkway, and vast greenhouses hosting a huge variety of rare and unusual plants from across the world, this is a day not to be missed.

Reserve your serviced apartment for Kew Gardens

April also sees this year’s opening of the Chelsea Physic Garden), one of the world’s oldest apothecary gardens, where you’ll not only see an important, yet stunning medicinal plant collection, but also how the garden has adapted to changing times.  Different growing environments have been established, such as the Pond Rockery, Fortune’s Tank Pond and an evolving collection of Glasshouses.

London heralds some spectacular events this spring for families.  There’s something for everyone, whether you’re into chocolate, (as most of us are at Easter), or someone that enjoys a more outdoor experience. Finding something to do during the children’s spring breaks is easy, with a plethora of Easter and spring- themed activities available, throughout the capital, many of which having family-friendly events.

Take Battersea Park Children's Zoo for example, which runs Easter events for families, such as an Easter egg hunt with a difference!  Spot brightly coloured eggs, hidden amongst the animal enclosures, as you take a look around the zoo.

Or venture out to Lauderdale House, in Highgate, for the ‘Great Egg Roll’ event, or to take part in egg decorating or a treasure hunt?

A must for those with small children, is the London Wetland Centre, which is certainly worth visiting in spring.  At this stunning nature reserve, you’ll find ducklings, chicks in abundance, buds and bugs to explore, along with the Easter GIANT duck trail to discover.  Until 17th April, cunningly disguised ducks will be hiding amongst the real ones, with chocolate prizes for those finding them all!  You’ll wander around the lakes, ponds and gardens and also discover 14 new, 6ft tall celebrity Dusty Ducks, arriving in Spring to form the ‘Dusty Duck Trail’, made to celebrate the WWT’s 70th anniversary. (1st April to 21st May).

For culture lovers, many of the National Trust properties run spring family events, enabling you to savour lovely London properties whilst still keeping the children happy!  Red House is one such option. Its family wombat trail, open from April, will find Top, the wombat, and friends, who are hiding at Red House.  Its Easter egg hunt (14th April), boasts an ‘antipodean adventure’ to discover what has escaped into the gardens.  So hop along to help to find all the animals and claim your chocolate prize.  Most hunts cost £3.50 per child

For a free event you could witness a huge sporting event, the London Marathon, (23rd April). Savour the party atmosphere whilst cheering on runners from all over the world.  Taking in all of London’s top sites, this great charity event is not to be missed.

A variety of St George’s Day celebrations start with the Mayor of London’s Feast of St George at Trafalgar Square, taking place on April 25th.  Expect cookery demonstrations, food stalls, live music and dancing performances to entertain you.

2017 alfresco fun begins at Shakespeare’s open-air, Globe Theatre this spring, where a spectacular production of 'Romeo and Juliet' takes place from 22nd April – 9th July.  This classic tale of lovers from warring families marks the beginning of a year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 ‘Summer of Love.’

English royalty forms a particular attraction to many foreign visitors, where the pageantry and pomp form the mainstay of British culture.  Although the Queen’s official birthday is in June, her actual birthday is 21st April.   So go along to Hyde Park and the Tower of London, where to mark the occasion, you can listen out for gun salutes.

Continuing the royal theme, why not join the masses of spectators watching the traditional procession, making its way along The Mall and Whitehall, leading the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament in May? This important, century old, ceremony marks the start of the new parliamentary year, and the speech is broadcast live on TV, so spot the horse-led coach, escorted by the Household Cavalry and savour the nostalgia.
For something a little different, why not try IWA Canalway Cavalcade? This is London's best waterways festival.  Organised by volunteers, and with the advantage of free admittance, this unique waterway boat gathering has been taking place at Little Venice since 1983.  From 29th April to 1st May, (First May bank holiday weekend), come and take part in the colourful festivities.  There’ll be a boaters’ gathering, pageant of boats, trade shows and stalls, live music, kids’ activities, competitions, Morris Dancers, a real ale bar, and a wide variety of snacks and food.

For another free event, head over to St Paul's Church on the West Piazza for the Covent Garden May Fayre and Puppet Festival (May 10th),  marking the 40th anniversary of this event.  This is the spot where Samuel Pepys spotted the first Punch and Judy show in May 1662.  Punch and Judy puppeteers will congregate to perform throughout the day. So go along to enjoy the shows and celebrate the art of puppetry on Mr Punch's 353rd birthday. Also expect maypole dancing and a variety of workshops.

With the UK schools breaking up for a week’s half-term holiday at the end of May, these are just a few of the family-friendly attractions on offer.  Many of London’s more famous attractions, such as the Science and Natural History Museums often put on special activities for children, so keep your eyes peeled for these events, and enjoy the spring sunshine!
